The Manoir des Bruyères is a typical Auge style building and a splendid example of Norman architecture. It has a flat tiled roof, criss crossed timber framing on the white washed north wall and slate façade on the south.
 
As a living testament to its age, an inscription can still be seen today on the principal cross beam of the manor’s wooden frame that reads “This house was built by Francois Fosse in the year 1284”. Clearly the attraction of the Auge Valley for farmers and breeders was apparent even in the Middle Ages.

There are several indications that this beautiful building was added to over the years before undergoing its major renovation in the 18th century. Most noticeable of these is the walnut staircase leading from the chateau to the kitchen garden.
From the comfort of one of the four poster beds in the delightful rooms it is possible to see the garden, the old well with its flat tiled room (identical to the Manor) as well as the 18th century half timbered cider press. Some parts of the old pressing tower still exist today. The apples used to fall directly from the loft into the round trough where they were then crushed using a horse drawn millstone.
